Discover Wine Tasting in Paradise on the Big Island
Volcano Winery is the first winery founded on the Big Island and is located right down the road from the Kilauea Overlook! With eight signature wines and a selection of limited wines, you’ll find something here for everyone. Tropical fruits like the exotic jaboticaba berry and guava are blended with traditional grapes to create vibrant wines that capture Hawaii’s playful spirit. For example, their award-winning top seller, Volcano Red, is a semi-sweet blend of red and white grapes blended with the local jaboticaba berries.
Open 364 days a year, the tasting room has a laid-back atmosphere and is the perfect place to pull up a seat to try their unique bottlings. Have a tea lover in your group? They also offer award-winning teas that are hand-harvested and allowed to wither in the full sun naturally! There’s even a tea tasting available so you can sample their Black Tea, White Tea, and Silver Needle Tea.
Wine and tea tastings are available daily from 10am to 5:30pm, with multiple flights available. The premium flight allows you to sample all eight signature wines, including the award-winning Infusion Tea Wine. When available, they also have vintage tastings that include their Estate Pinot Noir, Estate Cayuga White, Estate Syrah, and Limited Pinot Noir. Learn more about their wines and tasting menu.

Explore Expansive Scenic Views and History at MauiWine
Breathtaking scenic views, wine tastings, and vast historical grounds to discover — what more can you ask for? That’s what you’ll find at MauiWine, a 23-acre vineyard located in the Ulupalakua region on the slopes of Haleakala volcano. Once known as the Tedeschi Vineyards, this local winery produces wines from their estate-grown grapes, pineapple, and raspberries. Here you can enjoy creations by the glass, wine flights, wine cocktails, and pupu-style dishes.
Their main tasting room is situated in the King’s Cottage, a charming space built in the 1870s to accommodate King Kalākaua, the last reigning king of Hawaii. As a fun fact, the 18-foot-long bar in the tasting room was made from a single mango tree grown on the ranch. Reservations are strongly encouraged.
For those looking for a special tasting or to host a private event at one of the wineries in Hawaii, MauiWine has renovated what’s known as the Old Jail — an impressive lava rock building with walls that are 2-feet thick. This historic building has served various functions over the past 150 years, including as the primary business office for the notorious Captain James Makee.
Our favorite way to experience this incredible winery is through one of their private tours! You’ll be greeted by a glass of sparkling wine and a knowledgeable host who will show you around the historic estate and winery production area. Here you will learn about making wine in Maui and the storied past of Rose Ranch, now Ulupalakua Ranch and MauiWine. You’ll also have the opportunity to taste six different wines and be able to enjoy one of their signature picnic boxes. Granted, at the time of writing this, they are not currently offering this service — but we hope they’ll be able to again soon.
Curious to know more about pineapple wine? It started as a fluke in the mid-1970s and instantly became an overnight sensation. MauiWine currently offers three pineapple wines to choose from: Maui Blanc, Maui Splash, and Hula O Maui — a fruity and zesty sparkling wine.
Learn All About Winemaking at Oahu’s Only Winery
Opening in 2012, OENO Winemaking is the newest winery on the Hawaii Islands and the only one located on Oahu! They use ingredients imported from the world’s most renowned grape-producing regions to make their ferment and blend for each of their 150+ wines. Unlike the other places listed, you’ll find the grapes they import are already crushed, which allows them to begin fermenting in their temperature-controlled fermentation room efficiently.
If you’re staying in Oahu, this is the place to go for a wine tasting. Here you’ll have the opportunity to sample six different wines and learn all about the wine-making process. As an added bonus, OENO includes a complimentary bottle of wine for every two guests in your group for their wine tastings.
Or, if you prefer to be more hands-on and will be staying in Hawaii for an extended period of time, you can even create your own wine with OENO’s staff! This experience begins by tasting some of their bottles and selecting which flavor profiles you prefer. Each batch is fermented in-house, and this process can take between 4 and 6 weeks. After that time, you will have crafted your custom label and can go back to bottle your customized blend!
Bonus: Kauai’s Meadery and Tasting Room
Last but certainly not least, Nani Moon Meadery and Tasting Room is a must-do for anyone who is visiting Kauai! They are the only producer of mead (aka honey) wine in Hawaii. If you aren’t familiar, this unique beverage is made by hand from locally sourced honey, spices, and fruits — plus, there are no chemical additives like sulfates.
Sound up your alley? Their tasting room is open on Thursdays and Fridays from 12pm to 5pm! Here you will be able to sample the Nani Moon Collection that is full of different varieties of mead, each reflecting the Hawaiian climate and local cuisine.
